Flowers to attract birds

Spring is coming. This is the time to plant flowers for all birds. The plants I am planning to plant are sunflowers, daisies, and zinnias. The reason I'm planting these flowers is to attract Lesser Goldfinches and House Finches.

The flowers that attract humming birds are Yucca and Aloe and I plan to plant Morning Glo

What are  you planning to plant?

How to keep House Finches away from Hummingbird feeder

Last year the House Finches broke the Hummingbird feeder and thats' why its on the balcony wall.

The Hummingbird were scared off by the other birds.I saw 2 Hummingbirds last year.

I am going on the defense this year.

How to keep House Finches away from Hummingbird feeder?

1. Used Hummingbird feeders wih out perches or big bases.

2. Hang one feeder close to a window to scare the House Finches.

3. Put up more Hummingbird feeders.

4.  Teach the neighborhood squirrels to chase the House Finches.

Mysterious Green Parrots of El Cajon

Last week we sent photos to Cornell Lab of Ornithology during our Project Feeder data collection of green parrots that visited our feeders and were observed by me.

In response Cornell Lab of Ornithology sent an email suggesting we explore what species of green parrots we have visiting our feeders. The website they recommend we use is called The California Parrot Project.   Check it out!

I learned that parrots have been around since 1960. There are six different species that are possibly flying around El Cajon. My challenge is to identify which one of the species is flying around El Cajon.

Please join me in California Parrot Project to help identify the species of parrots in El Cajon. Please post pictures and comments.

Birds Visit Despite Cold

Data from January 11-12, 2016
Birds visited despite the cold because they wanted food. It was observed that they drank lots of water from the bird bath.

This is the data we collected this week. America Crows won the day!
